Life Lessons From Ephesians 1 & 2 Part 1

Recently I had a conversation with someone about who they were in Christ. This person had low self-esteem and didn’t think they were worth much even as a believer. They didn’t even know what God thinks of them. How sad! I have found this way of thinking is more prevalent in the body of Christ than it should be. Many believers don’t know who they are as a child of God. They aren’t familiar enough with God’s word to know what it says about them.

What does it mean to be in Christ? We become born-again believers by accepting God’s gift of salvation that is made possible by Jesus having shed His blood on the cross in payment for our sins. So we become God’s children in or through Christ. Once we do that we have a new identity.

Ephesians chapters 1 & 2 have some of the best identification markers of a born-again believer. Those that we have the full right to claim and believe. If we accept them, they can’t help but make a difference in our lives both inwardly and outwardly. In the next two posts I am going to be sharing twelve specific verses which show exactly who you are in Christ.

1. You are chosen.

Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation

of the world, that we should be holy

and without blame before Him in love

Ephesians 1:4

God looked ahead at your life and knew you would be receptive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and the gift of salvation, so He chose you to be one of His children.

2. You are adopted.

Having predestined us to adoption as sons

by Jesus Christ to Himself,

according to the good pleasure of His will

Ephesians 1:5

3. You are accepted.

…to the praise of the glory of His grace,

by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1:6

He accepts us however we come to Him. No matter our past; no matter how much or how little we have done wrong. Nothing is too big or too bad for His love to overcome.

4. You are redeemed and forgiven.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Ephesians 1:7

We are redeemed; bought with a price. Freed from the bondage and chains that we were in. Jesus shed His blood just so we could be set free and finally forgiven. And He continues to forgive us; every time we come to Him to confess and repent. If that isn’t love, I don’t know what is.

5. You are a heir.

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance…

Ephesians 1:11

Since we’ve been adopted into God’s family we are heirs. Only in eternity will we finally see everything He has planned to bless us with.

6. You are sealed.

In Him you also trusted, after you heard

the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation;

in whom also, having believed,

you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 1:13

A seal shows ownership. When you became a believer you were sealed with the Holy Spirit; meaning your life is no longer only your own; it also belongs to God. No one can take you from Him.

We’ve gone over chapter one with these six verses. I hope you can begin to see who you are in Christ and just how much God loves you. In my next post we’ll continue looking at our identity through chapter two of Ephesians.

Until next time, God bless.
